Apple Turnover

Apple advertising used to be about creative empowerment. Their stance was that you could do anything you dreamed of by way of using Apple’s products.

Now, it’s about how you can fool others into thinking you’re doing work or being a thoughtful person. The story now is how you can offload your responsibilities, your social interactions, and your decision-making to a large language model. I don’t like it.

My computer is a tool for me to use, not a stand-in for me when I can’t be bothered.

This significantly diverges from the cross-platform conversion of this emoji from pistol to water gun from 2016 to 2018. 🔗 https://blog.emojipedia.org/x-redesigns-water-pistol-emoji-back-to-a-firearm/

LGBT and Marginalized Voices Are Not Welcome on Threads https://www.macstories.net/stories/lgbt-and-marginalized-voices-are-not-welcome-on-threads/

Here’s a story that I wish I didn’t have to write. But it’s high time that we make this a central point anytime, anywhere Threads is pictured as a decent alternative to Twitter and Mastodon. It is only that if you’re a straight, white male.

LGBT and Marginalized Voices Are Not Welcome on Threads

As Twitter was crumbling under Elon Musk’s new leadership in 2023, various online circles found themselves flocking to alternative platforms. While some may have kept using Twitter (now known as… X), a non-negligible number of communities migrated over to Mastodon and other smaller platforms. Meanwhile, Meta shipped its own textual social media platform, Threads. The...

Last week, we knew Meta had removed a covert influence campaign originating from Israel that spread pro-Israel messaging using fake accounts. Today the NYT reports the Israeli government was actually behind it. Lots of details in this piece:

Israel Secretly Targets U.S. Lawmakers With Influence Campaign on Gaza War

Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs ordered the operation, which used fake social media accounts urging U.S. lawmakers to fund Israel’s military, according to officials and documents about the effort.

Huge yikes.

Kagi is now partnering with Brave to power its search results — and they seem to be dismissing their users’ concerns regarding this partnership with a company that’s notorious for being led by a proud anti gay rights supporter.

Just as I’ve consistently advised against using Brave’s products, I now advise against using Kagi as long as it contributes to a homophobic business.

There can be no neutral politics when it comes to people’s rights and lives.

I can't sleep

I can't sleep. I'm lying in bed every night, and images of Gaza are running through my head. Fathers holding their babies, dead, caked in dust. Bombs dropped on homes [1], on hospitals [2], on schools [3]. Tens of thousands of dead [4] in indiscriminate bombings [5]. Children crying, pulling
