This review makes no sense to me. Beyond the fact that the protagonists are both trans and obsessed with movies and tv, there’s not much I SAW THE TV GLOW shares with MYRA BRECKINRIDGE thematically, tonally, or any other way.
After Gore Vidal’s death, some people—including people who knew him—rushed to cast doubt on his love affair with Jimmy Trimble. Mewshaw even claims not to have heard the story before 1993. But here is Vidal in TWO SISTERS (1970) telling the same story he later did, about a man identified on the following page as “Jimmy”
Well, that’s certainly one way to justify being lazy.
Following up my conservative evangelical madness with some conservative (sorry, “Burkean conservative”) occult madness. Surprisingly, they’re bad in exactly the same way—under-cited, over-reliant on the author’s unstated biases, shallow and mostly boring. The only difference, really, is that the occultist is somehow less entertainingly mad than the evangelical.
The book, by the way, is THE RETURN OF THE GODS by Jonathan Cahn. An absolute mess of bigotry, stupidity, vapidity, and falsehood.
