People say mastodon is too hard to explain to non-technical people, but I explained it the other day to someone extremely non-technical by just saying "it's decentralised. so instead of being run by one company, it's run by whoever wants to run their own version of it. This way there's no profit incentive, no algorithm and no ads" and she immediately understood what I meant, and why that would be a good thing.

You don't really need to explain federation and all the underlying tech to explain people what it is. Even federation is simple to explain. "anyone can run their own version of it - but they can all still talk to each other"

as someone who believes in a higher power it sucks that basically everyone else I share that space with is detestable. Do know that I'm not like that . Never have been and never will be. There's a reason I have an embargo on religion on my profile and it's not because I think its scum - its because it has nothing to do with how I or anyone else should be treating you and everything to do with how I should be treating myself. I don't want people to ever think I make judgements based on religious contexts and I don't want people to think that I apply the same set of requirements to them that I apply to myself. I'm so much worse to myself. No one deserves to be treated the way I treat myself.

I don't find wanting to not be alone to be evil.
I don't find being scared of letting go evil.
I don't find wanting safety evil.
It's when you use that fear to justify oppression that it becomes a problem.
