Flashback to a Yankee Stadium classic from 1951

Mastodon is financed by crowdfunding instead of venture capital not because we don't know that venture capital exists, not because we don't have bills to pay, and not because venture capital isn't willing to give money to new social media platforms. VCs don't want a sustainable business, they want a big exit. Every VC-backed business is on a timer to deliver or die.
@arstechnica a jellyfin server is the best streaming service!
@feditips you should really rephrase this as "don't use lemmy.ml" rather than encourage people to ignore the entire open source decentralized platform "Lemmy" where they could join another instance or host their own and completely avoid everything you're talking about.

@gamingonlinux I should have specified the early 2000s or earlier lol. Obviously those who grew up in the 80s or 90s would be in the same boat.

And I agree with you. In a game like Fortnite it's fine because it's free and doesn't affect gameplay. In a game like Madden or COD, these microtransactions have no place in my opinion.

@gamingonlinux to a lot of people, that's just how video games are. You would have to have grown up in the early 2000s before online gaming was a big thing to really appreciate how it used to be. Think of people who only play sports games. Sports games cost $70 yet are filled with microtransactions. For a lot of people, unfortunately those are the only games they play, and most sports games have no competition. Madden is the only NFL game. NBA 2K is the only NBA game.
@[email protected] The idea is that hopefully a lot of different instances grow to a similar size, and you could subscribe to many of those different communities from different instances and see them all on your feed. If the mods on one went rogue like they always seem to do on Reddit, you have alternatives rather than all your eggs in one basket.
