I can't get normal people to join the #Fediverse, and I have to #rant about it.
When #Twitter fell, the Fediverse essentially was #Mastodon, but Mastodon then had a repelling #onboarding, virtually no #discoverability, no #unique selling point, a content warning #harassment culture, and a terrible user experience due to that repulsive #federation concept and some horrible apps, plus a freakingly nerdish #exclusionary community.
And when #Reddit fell, so many other projects were on the edge of adopting #ActivityPub that the time when people associated the Fediverse with Mastodon was already about to be over for good. And that made it even worse. The #userexperience became a total crap, and the #servers were all bullshit software and #adminhell, and there was nothing left that the upcoming #Meta engagement could destroy. That's where we're now.
In https://www.wired.com/story/tiktok-platforms-cory-doctorow we all read about the "#enshittification" of #Amazon, #Facebook, #Google, #TikTok, #Instagram, and I absolutely agree. Those platforms are "terminally enshittified". But the claim that the Fediverse as it is now could become an alternative to that is absolutely ridiculous.
Maybe some normal people eventually will join the Fediverse whatever that will mean. But then we'll have crap software, admin hell and enshittification. And we most certainly won't remember Mastodon.
As I was saying, this is just a rant. And I'm in the Fediverse, because I'm not normal people. Nobody wants normal people. And there are people that still use Facebook or even Twitter. That's not normal, either. That's pure #perversion. Maybe there are no normal people. Or maybe we are the normal people, after all.
But normal or not. The Fediverse has to substantially change to become an actual option for everyone. But I think it’s about to do just that. End of rant.
