Yesterday we lost Judy Heumann, a disability rights activist to be reckoned with and a blazing light that showed so many disabled people (myself included) to fight for what they deserved and more. This one really hurts.

Sorting Song joins the V&A's collection alongside ZEITGUISED's geist.xyz (2016), a ground-breaking computer generated '0% organic' textiles project by the Berlin based studio using an array of software including Cinema 4D and Marvellous Designer as well as biomedical scientific simulation software. https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1671306/geistxyz-geistxyz-zeitguised/

'geist.xyz' is a film by Berlin-based studio ZEITGUISED using 'handcrafted algorithmic textiles' created with procedural computer software. Described as ‘0% organic’ and ‘100% processed’, 'geist.xyz' is an experiment in speculative textiles which encourages the viewer to imagine the future possibilities of fabrics and their potential evolution.

I'll be writing more about my Art Fund New Collecting award acquisitions I've been making at the V&A soon with some of the research into computer generated design and graphics in our collection, however I'm really happy that a recent addition made possible with the funding has been Sorting Song (2021) by Simone C Niquille. https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1731161/sorting-song-sorting-song-simone-c-niquille/

The Computer History Museum have released the source code for the Apple Lisa on the occasion of the computer's 40th birthday. It's made possible through the permission and collaboration with Apple, an interesting challenge to industrial heritage facing many institutions working with software history (including my own) in that preservation sometimes relies on these relationships. https://computerhistory.org/press-releases/chm-makes-apple-lisa-source-code-available-to-the-public-as-a-part-of-its-art-of-code-series/

Visited Rene Matić’s brilliant upon this rock today at South London Gallery today, which is made up of photographs, objects of history and iconography and an astonishingly honest and to-the-bone film ‘many rivers’ which is as intimate as it is complex. I’ve loved Matić’s work for a long time so it’s great to see it come together to tell a story of contemporary Britain and the artist’s own family stories in such a compelling and rich way. It’s open til 27th November, you’d be daft to miss it.
