I'm excited that Threads exists and hope many make the switch from Twitter. I also hope Meta/Instagram follows through on their word and connects to ActivityPub. I absolutely love the idea of being able to call Mastodon home, but have the ability to follow and interact with people/companies I like on Threads.

But I will never join it. It's not even about the privacy stuff. I'm still on Facebook/Instagram because I have communities locked in there. I just despise algorithmic timelines and ads.

Hypothesis: The Fediverse consists almost entirely of adults.

I expect most youths are drawn to the large corporate social networks; but those of us who took the effort to come here have likely experienced the Internet before most of those existed.

Of course, the only way to test this is by collecting data using the most scientifically rigorous method available to me: a Mastodon poll, lol

(I expect this will only reach English-speaking Fedi, but do boost if you're able)

Twitter: I follow news and political giants, but all I see are bad people and arguments
Bluesky: I follow 10% of my old friends who were able to get out of twitter in time and sometimes it works
Threads: I follow my friends but I can’t see them through the algorithm of businesses
Mastodon: oh look a beekeeper in the Netherlands
"Competition is fine, cheating is not," responds Elon Musk to a tweet about #Twitter threatening to sue #Meta over #Threads.
@jeffjarvis Finally, the third Winkelvoss twin we were all awaiting.
Attention! I recently learned that the behaviour of lying flat out on the belly with arms and legs spread out that some animals do, often to cool off, by radiating heat into the cooler ground, is called "splooting." I personally have been calling it "going full rug", but I guess splooting is also hilarious. So here's a red panda splooting, in case you need a demonstration. #RedPanda
@mimsical NPR isn't as engaging as commercial radio. It's a feature not a fault. Given the underlying economics of user supported media, it's not surprising that Mastadon feels similar to NPR
@mimsical I think that new users experience a shock that their feed is so boring bc they don’t understand how much work the algorithms were doing to keep their brain focused on their screen. It takes time to curate a good list of follows and thus an interesting feed.
