Andrew Hedges 🦔Community is what the birdsite provided until they had to figure out how to pay for it. In my opinion, the advertising-supported business model of the modern web has had tragic consequences for society including radicalization of vast swaths of the population due to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, et. al needing to keep eyeballs on their feeds at all costs. We are the product on that type of site. Fingers crossed we can keep this #fediverse thing going without going down that road. 🤞

I'll go ahead and out myself as someone that created an account this morning.
I agree with this general sentiment but I'm left wondering how to apply what you've touched on?
* In some pockets of the internet the defacto answer for newbies is "lurk more"
* In others, a stickie points to the customs and culture of the community.
--> In summary: how do we do stay true to what you've said but also make this an inclusive place for people to join, learn, and grow with each other?

I've always thought of the problem statement as being rooted in the monetization model. Since in that model: engagement, independent of quality or outcome, drives the top line.
Perhaps a counter example is reddit that does generate promoted content based revenue but still feels like a place that enables pro-social engagement.
How timely for a Mastodon newbie like myself to see this as the first post! Will be my morning read 📖
