#OSINT, influence operations, inauthentic manipulation. Still finding my way around here, so bear with me.

Terrorist groups are increasingly adapting to technology to recruit, to disseminate illegal content and to promote violence. #OSINT can help identifying these networks and understanding the way they operate online.

Interesting leads here. This could be just a regular criminal scheme (phishing), but it could also be laying the groundwork for using typo squatting for an influence operation. This was one of the TTPs used in the Endless Mayfly campaign. Read more about it:

Great piece by @gavinwilde. I agree that the root cause for the spread of false narratives is due to domestic societal issues (I’ve dabbled in some quantitative research into which domestic factors correlate with higher levels of foreign states attempting to manipulate elections via the internet). These internal issues must be addressed to successfully counter disinformation. Endless fact-checking is simply not sustainable and trying to logically win over those who buy into false narratives is frequently a lost cause. However, I believe that this approach is more of a long-term approach.
To answer Gavin’s question, the problem I wish to tackle is the deliberate and manipulative manner in which false information is spread. While it may be a Sisyphean task, I believe we should also stay on top of how purveyors of disinformation exploit technology to promote their narratives in an inauthentic manner. False narratives, conspiracy theories, and scams will always exist in society, and we shouldn’t let them run wild. (But maybe that’s just because I work in trust & safety and am biased since I want to keep my job and enjoy technical investigations.)

The Problem With Defining “Disinformation”

Attributing these disputes to the discipline’s infancy is easy. But doing so ignores the fact that the definition of “information” was also once hotly contested. The reasons why pose lessons for countering the spread of falsehood at scale.

Interesting- new research suggests "loose ties" do exist between #Russia-based #ransomware groups and the Russian government (via @lhn) https://www.wired.com/story/russia-ransomware-gang-connections/

Questions about the Kremlin’s relationships with these groups remain. But researchers are finally getting some answers.

Alright, guess it is time to do an #introduction post. I'm Moshe, an #OSINT analyst and graduate student who studies hybrid warfare, grey zone conflicts, disinformation, and influence operation. My big thrill comes from digging into the TTPs of influence operations, especially the more technical aspects. Thankfully, I have the privilege to pursue my interests in the framework of my day job in the trust & safety industry, as well as my graduate research. I'm hoping to utilize this platform to expand my knowledge in OSINT, connect with the OSINT community, and engage with other influence operations researchers. In my opinion, the influence operations research community (and I may eventually adopt the #FIMI framework) has a ton of room to grow, form and adopt best practices, and collaborate better. Hope to play my small part in advancing these goals.
I may sometimes post about antisemitism, as this form of hate impacts me, and I am worried by its rise worldwide and across the political spectrum.

Wish there was a way to save drafts, as well as other people’s toots that I find interesting and want to come back to.

@mokwi8 @stephlamy @potemkinvillage ha, compared to 280 signs, this is a book you wrote, thank you!!! Yes, I also agree that content is important to do fact checking and find ways of communicating better, but it goes far beyond... if you have actors who use such manipulation intentionally and strategically to achieve a certain goal, we need to understand HOW they are doing it, what TTPs they are using and what responses we need.

And by focusing on the manipulative behaviour, we also take away from those who use the alleged fight against #disinformation as a pretext to crack down on freedom of expression
