A second one from Mondays park run. Ruki has enjoyed this place for almost her entire life. There are more visits behind us than lay ahead but each one is great.
This is an old one. Processed with VSCOcam T3, back when everything needed a little extra grey in it... Still, pretty great for an iPhone 6. I was always impressed with that thing.
My favorite from that particular little car gathering. Something that has been great with the #NikonZf is shooting in black and white mode while also saving the RAW image and then processing that image in Lightroom with the Adaptive Black and White feature. Being able to see what I want to produce, but then having the flexibility to get the detail when I underexpose is really a killer feature of this camera.

35mm 1.4 used here.
Finally, after more than a decade of living here, got around to checking out Top Notch and on a classic car night. Will dig through images later, but at first glance it is a photogenic place if you get the chance to go.

I keep longer form thoughts on Write.as, images on Vernissage, and the fun little things here. Should be enough to keep me entertained online for a minute.

Forever isn't long enough to have a good dog. Even if you find yourself saying "15 years is an exceptional run for a basset hound", you'll still want more time with your dog. Just one of those things. Gus here was an exceedingly individual dog. Going to miss that bark that could make your teeth rattle in your skull. Good dog Gus boy.
But also, obligatory “oh no, rain! Whatever will the world’s best drivers do?!” #belgiangp #f1
Great drive from Lewis. Maybe a bad call to pit Hulk that late? McLaren dominant. …Lawson proving once again that his move to Racing Bulls would have been genius if it was intentional. #belgiangp #f1

AI BS | Subliminal Learning

There's been a lot of reporting about this new AI research paper over the past couple days, and the vast majority of it sounds like the end times for AI companies. Color me surprised when it doesn't sound nearly as apocalyptic as the headlines suggest. Sensationalist headline writing and salacious “reporting” won over when talking about this shit, yet again.

Subliminal Learning: Language models transmit behavioral traits via hidden signals in data

We study subliminal learning, a surprising phenomenon where language models transmit behavioral traits via semantically unrelated data. In our main experiments, a "teacher" model with some trait T (such as liking owls or being misaligned) generates a dataset consisting solely of number sequences. Remarkably, a "student" model trained on this dataset learns T. This occurs even when the data is filtered to remove references to T. We observe the same effect when training on code or reasoning traces generated by the same teacher model. However, we do not observe the effect when the teacher and student have different base models. To help explain our findings, we prove a theoretical result showing that subliminal learning occurs in all neural networks under certain conditions, and demonstrate subliminal learning in a simple MLP classifier. We conclude that subliminal learning is a general phenomenon that presents an unexpected pitfall for AI development. Distillation could propagate unintended traits, even when developers try to prevent this via data filtering.
