Of course it’s about the crow! You have glanced at my handle, right? When I saw him sitting atop that sign from a block away I began a slow and cautious stalk in the hopes of approaching close enough to get an interesting photo. I thought I had missed out, until I had a chance to review the photos afterward.

Of course it’s about the sign, urging caution while the cars streak speedily by behind it. America’s urban corridors are not built for pedestrians or cyclists.

On this particular day, looking at this particular scene, what struck me was the emptiness and the waste. The empty store fronts, leading to the empty parking lot. The way in which all this land is wasted when the store that was supposed to be getting people to drive their cars to it fails. The way in which nothing can go in here that doesn’t adhere to the same idea: that the store must be compelling enough to cause enough people to drive to it.

The bare branch in the top of the foreground was definitely a visual element I wanted to include, but it was the mixed messaging of the signs that got my attention. On the one hand there’s the casino, a business reliant and poor decision quality. On the other there’s the sign for non-alcoholic beer. It felt like the sign in the back was looking over the shoulder of the sign in front and trying to get you to be more tempered.

Besides the motion of the pedestrian across the street and strong leading lines, there were a couple things that really caught my eye here. The first was the fact of the old man stubbornly crossing the street against the ‘don’t walk’ signal. The second was the feeling of opposition created by one figure moving forward while all the cars on the opposite side sat motionless.
