I'm not saying this is a bad thing! It's just how it works. I often help solve problems that are too hard for me personally by running around and talking to different people until I bump into the right one. These people are not all sitting in one "place".

A little embarrassed that it took so long to notice, but notifications have their own settings page where you can turn off sounds. They were really starting to bug me in the web interface.
Go to your notifications page, click the sliders button in the upper right-hand side of the middle column, then turn off sounds for everything.
