@siracusa @ArjanBos the appropriate technology to combat this is just leaving the door open a crack. My sister-in-law has a special device to facilitate this, but over X-mas I noted that my mom's washer (a Whirlpool I think?) has a special detent in the door opening sequence that holds it open 15 or so degrees. All that said, I'm a top-load sympathizer at heart, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

In addition to Sam's, I've personally experienced the phone-based one in New England Big Y (grocery store) and even the handheld-scanner-based one in otherwise-maligned-by @siracusa Stop & Shop.
