Today is Dad’s birthday. He’d have been 75. It was only just-shy-of 4 years ago, but it could just as easily be yesterday. Or 20 years. Time is goofy like that, and the chain of happenings that lead to us losing Dad is certainly an inflection point. There was the life I lived before all that, and then all that went down, and now I’m the person I am now—in the after.
Every time one of these articles come out, I remember the time in 2013 that the editor of a major academic journal desk-rejected an article of mine about data leakage from gay dating apps via ad networks, because “gay-focused apps are too niche and non-representative a topic for research to warrant mainstream publication.”
