I have heard the same about my small town Iowa high school. An old PE teacher/coach said the reason was that they didn’t want lint/fabric bits clogging up the drain/filter/something or other. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@atpfm @siracusa my dad’s solution to sock pairing: safety pin the socks together. And, yes, he leaves the safety pin in one sock while wearing them. I regrettably admit that it has come in handy on more than one occasion….
