The US doesn't seek division in Europe per se. They seek Europe united with a fascist MAGA USA. It was clearly to be read in Rubio's speech earlier in Munich also. They want all of us to join them in their far-right ideology with all its ugly undercurrents, just as Orban's Hungary already has done.

I love this move by @Flipboard. Given Musk’s role in Twitter, his close relationship with the incoming Trump administration, and his obvious incentives, it’s smart and necessary to provide access to news outside of Twitter/X. Threads doesn’t want it, due to political headaches, and federation makes it a harder target for government interference.
