Former journalist, ex-central bank communications, now corporate comms person. Live in Germany, roots in UK. Interested in all of the above and more. Writing in personal capacity on here. (Oh and same username on Twitter, but opened this as a hedge in May ‘22.)
I may have found the peak hipster product

I ran along part of my old cycle commute in London this morning, from
Greenwich to London Bridge. A decade ago this road was a nightmare and you either had to mix with cars or take backstreets. Now there is a segregated two-way bike lane all the way.

So I’m calling it: London has become more cycle friendly than Frankfurt. (Why they can’t do this along the Eschersheimer Landstraße, for instance, where cars and bikes share two lanes, is a mystery.)

This is what we call Schardenfreude
Journalism is not a crime. As one of more than 300 former Moscow correspondents from 22 countries, I signed this letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov calling for the immediate release of Evan Gershkovich of the WSJ. I worked in Moscow many years ago (and subsequently reported from there often on assignment) and never met Evan as it was well before his time. But his arrest marks a shocking development in the treatment of independent journalists.

A trip around northern Italy and the reminder that it is almost impossible to get a bad coffee in this country - from shopping mall to motorway service station to train station to café to restaurant. Whereas everywhere outside Italy, you constantly search and struggle to find good coffee (and pay significantly more…) Bravissimo!
An early morning S-Bahn train in freezing temperatures: crackling and sparking as the pantograph runs along the iced up overhead power lines.

Looks like the learning curve is the same for all of us
