New post: The Farage-Coutts affair exemplifies the bankruptcy of UK media and politics https://mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2023/08/the-farage-coutts-affair-exemplifies.html

I ran along part of my old cycle commute in London this morning, from
Greenwich to London Bridge. A decade ago this road was a nightmare and you either had to mix with cars or take backstreets. Now there is a segregated two-way bike lane all the way.

So I’m calling it: London has become more cycle friendly than Frankfurt. (Why they can’t do this along the Eschersheimer Landstraße, for instance, where cars and bikes share two lanes, is a mystery.)

Journalism is not a crime. As one of more than 300 former Moscow correspondents from 22 countries, I signed this letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov calling for the immediate release of Evan Gershkovich of the WSJ. I worked in Moscow many years ago (and subsequently reported from there often on assignment) and never met Evan as it was well before his time. But his arrest marks a shocking development in the treatment of independent journalists.
