Hooray! The new security screen door I was waiting to have delivered arrived safely!

I've been using those mesh curtains that use big flat magnets to hold the gap closed when you aren't going in and out, but its not cat-proof, let alone human-proof.

I've been so glad the weather stayed cool here while waiting for this. Next up is to get it installed by a super-skilled and chilled out contractor we just started working with (through our landlord).

So that leaves as my last (I think) instance migration task, figuring out how to archive my ~450 toots from the old account.

After a few minutes searching, it looks to me like 'toot export' is all bundled up under 'account migration' in this high-priority issue on GitHub: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/177

Viewing the user's page https://mastodon.cloud/@metagrrrl only shows a small number of toots and if you click "Show more" it hides what you were looking at before to show the next chunk. So, no saving that page.

A lot of people seem to be jumping on https://mastodon.social right now, even though the end goal is to have users separated out across multiple federated instances. However, if people start puttin...

Well, that wasn't so bad. I've now manually searched for and refollowed (or follow-requested) for the new account the ~70 folks I was following from the old account.

I've pinned in the new account 4 of the 5 hashtags I had pinned in the old account (archaeology, dnd5e, criticalrole, criticalroleart) and decided not to pin mastoart as it's just too busy a hashtag, though it has its rewards.

And I've copied over my preferences (and added 'opting out of search engines').

@Danhon It was a very pertinent question, so I understand, but yowp!
@Danhon Perhaps Delete & Re-draft and set the privacy how you want it? I liked it so I boosted it and then read this. Whoops. :D

When you move from one Mastodon instance to another, though almost all of the work is manual, there is one nice thing you can do in the old profile.

Go into Edit Profile, scroll all the way to the bottom where it says "Move to a different account", and click "configure it here". Put in the new address, e.g. @metagrrrl, and a nice message will appear at the top of your old profile referring everyone to your new home & hiding the old follow link. :)

Oh and I'll also be boosting from there, so it'll be quieter on this channel. :)

First I have to refollow everybody...

Please follow me there and unfollow here as I will dual post until I close down this account.

The clear statements made by @Gargron as administrator of mastodon.social about why certain choices happen there are good. I may or may not agree with every single one but I am confident that administration of that instances is thoughtful, transparent, and not overwhelmed.

It's a big ol' instance and the flagship of Mastodon-the-software in many ways, so I recognize that it will probably always be home to more drama than a quiet backwater instance, but there seems to be good faith effort.
