Threads launches today with the promise of working with other services like Mastodon.

Will Meta's new platform live up to the potential of a federated network, or just end up being the Threadiverse?

If it truly federates "we can begin to hope for a real competitive environment... Users find it easier to stay in control, and companies find it harder to exploit people, as you just move somewhere else."

I appreciate all of John Mastodon’s visionary efforts, don’t get me wrong. But naming the system after himself like that kind of diminishes the contributions of the many other, already less visible, volunteers who built it.

And isn’t it long past time we also acknowledge the foundational work of Julia Mammoth?

Contrary to stereotype he's actually very smart. Once in a while you get a smart one.

Now seems like a good time to talk about how far-right extremists are using the Overton Window theory to force their ideas into the mainstream. The premise here is that today’s fringe ideas/beliefs can become tomorrow’s normal by shifting the boundaries of acceptable discourse. You do that by introducing people to more & more extreme ideas, so everything else seems reasonable in comparison.

eg, when “praising Hitler” becomes the comparison point, low-key bigotry suddenly doesn’t seem so bad. 1/

I won't be posting about the next panel, because I am the discussant in it. So, if you are interested, you will need to tune in :)

With the protest happening in the PRC now and much of the news being shared via #Twitter, I wonder how #censorship-resistant #Mastodon is really going to be when facing a #GFW-style opponent. 🤔

Let me explain #ChinaProtests are getting worldwide coverage because of people tweeting photos and videos. Engagement is likely to be shooting in. This is the lifeline Xi is giving Twitter. But…Beijing might lean on Musk to block handles. If Musk agrees (not least because his other business interests are on the line), the anti-Twitter sentiment will only strengthen.

In Tweets: Protests Break Out Across China After Urumqi Fire

This post contains a large volume of interactive embedded media, which may take time to load correctly. The current wave of protests across China in the wake of a deadly fire in Urumqi has been closely tracked and analysed on Twitter by on-the-ground observers, with others relaying content from Chinese social media, and still others […]

I'm still using the standard Android #mastodonapp. It's fine. But any suggestions for alternatives would be appreciated. I like the website's ability to switch between local and federated feeds, for example, and to follow hashtags
