Orca

The Orca initiative aims to produce a unified platform and set of APIs to develop, distribute and run sandboxed graphical applications on a variety of operating systems.

Orca

"These very typical words are in method and intent exactly like all those ads that tell us that if we don't buy this deodorant or detergent or gadget or whatever, everyone else, even our friends, will despise, mock, and shun us the advertising industry's attack on the fragile self-esteem of millions of people. This using of people's fear to sell them things is destructive and morally disgusting.

The fact that the computer industry and its salesmen and prophets have taken this approach is the best reason in the world for being very skeptical of anything they say. Clever they may be, but they are mostly not to be trusted. What they want above all is not to make a better world, but to join the big list of computer millionaires."

November Update

Hi! As always I’m long overdue for an Orca progress update, but don’t get fooled by the relative quietness of yours truly. There’s quite a lot of work in progress on Orca at the moment.

I wrote a blog post about my recent Jam project inspired by @dynamicland Realtalk here: https://forkingpaths.dev/posts/24-10-02/wheel_reinvention_jam_writeup.html
It exposes the motivations, how it works and how it differs from Realtalk, what insights I got from it and the new questions it raised for me.
Babbler

Last week was the 2024 Wheel Reinvention Jam! My entry is a little toy computing system based on my (mis)understanding of Dynamicland’s Realtalk.

More explanations/demo to come as I finish my end-of-Jam writeup
Logic gates, a counter, and a "stopwatch" implemented in Babbler (yeah it's the name of the jam project btw)
Here I added the ability to react to an object "pointing at" another object, which allows composing pieces of code by arranging them next to each other on the canvas
This week I made a little toy computing system for the Wheel Reinvention Jam.
It is based on my (mis)understanding of @dynamicland Realtalk.
Here's a recreation of a small Realtalk tutorial showing how objects can interact by claiming, wishing, or reacting to "facts" about the environment.
I published a new blog post on Orca, giving some updates about our latest progress and current work: https://orca-app.dev/posts/240731/july_update.html
July Update

Hey! Time flies and temperatures have risen to a mind-numbing 39°. Yes it’s Celsius, and I’m not prepared for it. But here I am, typing on a laptop that feels like a boiling kettle and sounds like a propeller plane. And I have some updates on what’s been going on for Orca this past couple of months. Grab some drink with ice cubes and have a nice read.
