I am an independent photojournalist focused for many years on the #environment, #humanrights, #socialjustice, #detention, #housing, #gentrification and #precariousworkers.

I also love to talk about languages and translation, the arts and all that the countryside has to offer.

London, UK. 26th January, 2023. Jean Hegarty, sister of victim Kevin McElhinney, speaks at a vigil to commemorate the 51st anniversary of Bloody Sunday during which 13 people were shot dead and at least 15 others injured after the British Army's Parachute Regiment opened fire on civilians at a civil rights protest in the Bogside.

It's that time of year again when my stream is full of images of dangerous metal particles, toxins and chemicals being pumped into the air above London.

Arsenic, strontium, barium, rubidium, cadmium, manganese, sodium oxalate, aluminium, copper, iron dust powder, potassium perchlorate, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and particulates, quite apart from all that smoke in the heart of the ULEZ.

Millions spent on trashing the environment and yet barely anyone contests it.

Whether you celebrate Christmas, another festival or nothing at all around this period, wishing you all an enjoyable break and peace, health and happiness in the New Year.

Rarely have I sensed a bigger disconnect than after coming home this morning from speaking to seriously struggling shopkeepers and passersby in Slough and then listening to millionaire government ministers speaking about the cost of living crisis on the radio.

@maco That's certainly how the app works but, personally, I find that knowing I can only make a few mistakes helps me focus better and so learn more. I almost invariably run out of time before I've exhausted my supply of mistakes.
@froozy I hope it works for you! The paid version would give you more opportunities to practise but I find I concentrate better just doing lessons and having to get them right! 🙂
@froozy I find that the free version focuses me much better on making progress through lessons rather than spending time on repetitive practice sessions or engaging with the competitive element. There are ads on the free version, of course, but, after several weeks, I couldn't tell you the name of a single advertiser on there as I just grab a cup of tea for a few seconds after every lesson. Paying does help support the app (a plus) but I find the free version a better model for my purposes.

I’ve been learning a language - Brazilian Portuguese - since summer using Duolingo and I’m quite surprised at its effectiveness in teaching the rudiments of a language with minimal effort and little or no expense on the part of the user as compared to other methods of language learning I’ve used in the past. What I find odd, though, is that I’ve made so much quicker progress since I moved from the paid version to the free version 🤫

There’s something very therapeutic about carefully folding and putting away your summer clothes for winter and then bringing out and rediscovering your winter clothes. A ritual I picked up during my time living in Italy. #winter
