In a way, AI isn't new. It's just advanced computational statistics, which (as @emilymbender and @alex point out in "The AI Con") has powered everyday things like spellcheck for decades.
What's new is that the current AI tools want us to abdicate, to give up our senses and minds, in favor of what the platforms tell us to think - to do - to feel.
The compulsion to give up our humanity is what we should be resisting (along with the environmental effects and all the other harms).
