I love love love love (in a sarcastic, dark humour sort of way) the title of the article Dr. Laura Revell, Dr. @astrokiwi.bsky.social and I wrote last week https://theconversation.com/a-new-space-race-could-turn-our-atmosphere-into-a-crematorium-for-satellites-276366.

But one thing got cut in the final edit: simulations of the night sky with 1 million satellites. I just tried to pitch a separate article on that, I'll see if that gets picked up this coming week or not.

A new space race could turn our atmosphere into a ‘crematorium for satellites’

Planned ‘megaconstellations’ of satellites could cause unforeseen harm to the ozone layer and climate systems. Global regulation is needed before it’s too late.

Refreshing read on LLMs from the creator of htmx and teacher of the craft: https://htmx.org/essays/yes-and/

What bothers me the most is seeing folks who don't understand the craft, the language, patterns, code smells, etc. Take the LLM away and they are lost.

Augmentation is great but augmentation without understanding is devastating.

In this essay, Carson Gross discusses his advice to young people interested in computer science worried about the future given the advancements in AI.

Internet friends, do any of you have a Fronius Gen24 series solar inverter on the same network as a Linux computer?

EDIT: Thanks everyone, I've got a few solid samples back now! Much appreciated

If so, could I trouble you to please run the following two commands and send me back the output?

avahi-browse -rv _Fronius-SE-Inverter._tcp

avahi-browse -rv _Fronius-SE-SmartMeter._tcp

(If you've not got the "Smart Meter" addon then the second command might not do anything, not to worry if so.)

Is all in the aid of reverse engineering for interoperability. If what I'm trying to do works then it'll be open sourced. 💪

Boosts for reach appreciated!

Whenever I see "GenAI basically can do the work of a junior dev", I assume that those people are using junior devs very differently from me. To me, the value of a junior developer is maybe like 20% the code they write, and 80% is a down payment to a future where they no longer are a junior. I still haven't found an AI that could do that second part.

My boss asked me "what new skills do you think web developers will need in two years", which gave me an opportunity to tell her about my recent efforts to learn urban foraging and how to identify edible plants in my neighborhood.

I want a repairable Linux laptop with a battery that will last 10h, and that will suspend reliably.

I want a repairable and reliable Linux phone that lets me phone, text, do banking, navigation, calendaring and email, without snooping on me.

Hardware innovation is dead for laptops and phones.

Now I want technology that won’t backstab me. I want tech that’s reasonably safe to use, that’s stable in time, that gives me a choice, and that adapts to how I want to use it.

Dear computer boffins please stop trying to fix problems I don’t have

I don’t want AI in anything and certainly not everything please stop asking
