I've talked about this before, but it's cool so I'm gonna talk about it again. Jazz Fusion acts, most prominently the bands T-Square and Casiopea, were huge in Japan, filling stadiums. They were highly influential on video game composers, and if you listen to their music from the late 70s and early 80s, you will hear Double Dragon, Street Fighter, Mega Man, Kirby, Mario Kart, &c. all over it.
