Unfortunately, we just entered Act II and I don't play a role here. Lots of us are just watching now.

๐Ÿ“: PNW, US
๐Ÿ’ป: platforms, dashboards, productivity
๐Ÿ“š: science, fantasy, sci-fi

And so I feel vindicated here, standing at the precipice of significant SWE job-loss, anxiety, and suffering, upon seeing how the general industry vibe has remained absolutely fixed on:

* Embracing change even if it ushers doom
* Not getting left behind
* Sticking with the crowd while believing that the crowd itself will be left behind

No, the SWEs not unionize.

They will drive each other, and the output of the industry, off a cliff before embracing either professionalism or the craft

We used to debate/discuss the "will software engineers ever unionize?" topic and my thoughts were always in line with:

* When you have an industry that promises to pay you what you're "worth", i.e. meritocracy
* And when you have so many people in the industry who desire to win PvP games and excel at personal accomplishments
* Then there's no general desire to work together, aka unionize, because that would mean "losing" the game of personal accomplishment in favor of sharing rewards

@baldur The "system" isn't even development (web, app, platform, infrastructure, etc.) itself, it's really just "what I can get done, myself, without any of you"
@aeva Ok, but there are also verbs with ads in them. The worst being those pesky unskippable adverbs
@nikitonsky when the pendulum swings back, someday, will we see no rounded rects?

@lrhodes Wealthy, disconnected people just want a button to push to get what they want. They only understand linear systems and request/response dynamics.

AI is their dream because it always does something that looks like progress (maybe after some prodding), so they think it will either replace the staff, or at least remove the reasons that their staff has been making for why the requests haven't been met yet.

It's really simple "stop making excuses, just do it" thinking.

@jschauma There's an ugly world where experienced staff are considered "essential workers" and therefore not allowed to not work in order to keep the pipes from bursting

Starting to really get into Sumล.

I'd almost forgotten that we could watch well-organized, established, commentated, global sporting events *without* having to see Red Bull and Visa adverts plastered in the background

@backupbear Real numbers for a Macbook Air 2022:

16 brightness levels (plus level "0" for screen off).

My indoor ideal would be 7.5, but of course there is no 7.5.

And while the brightness gaps starting at level 8 are very comfortable/understandable, at 7 it is not, so 7 feels way too dark and 8 feels way too bright.

It's like *one* firmware patch to a config look-up table away from being excellent, but has instead been a problem for years

@backupbear itโ€™s absolutely shocking that #3 clearly exists, and that many of us struggle with it daily
