Tweet this to get banned on Bird site
I didn't even know that @elonjet existed until the joinmastodon account on Bird Site got suspended. The Streisand Effect in action!
The true experience of Japanese fanart on the Internet is seeing a post that says only "rkgk" (plus hashtags) but the picture is actually way better than you could possibly hope to achieve in your entire life.
Twitter was special. But it's time to leave

Tweets were always short-lived. Turns out Twitter was too.

PwnAllTheThings

>try to make plans to pick up prescriptions then get dinner with friends
>pharmacy closes earlier than I recalled
>rush to do preparations on my bike that I thought I had way more time to do
>start cycling out to the pharmacy
>realize I don't have the key for my bike lock
>PANIK!!!!
>return home, scramble trying to find keys
>fail to find them, message friends to let them know I'm not gonna make it
>roommate hands me my spare set of keys

I'm a fucking disaster.

I don't follow Elon on the bird, so I had to go to his profile and scroll to find this poll and then vote on it so that I could see these results.

Given that most intelligent, left-leaning folks think that Elon Musk is a garbage human being and a roaring dumpster fire and likely don't follow him, do you think this poll might be just a bit biased? 🤔🤔🤔

Also speaking of upsides of centralization, isn't it funny how there's one mobile app for Twitter and it lets you do just about everything you can do via the web except on your mobile device? And not, like, a dozen of them with different feature sets which may or may not be compatible with the version of Mastodon your instance is running?

People want to be where their friends and family are, where their favorite content creators and thought leaders are, where their audience is or can be found. All of those things are infinitely more important to users of social media than technical merit or ideology.

It remains to be seen whether or not the bird dies and, if it does, what will fill in the void that it is leaving. But make no mistake, centralization has significant upsides for social networking, no matter how much you hate it.

I like the concept of the fediverse ideologically but I'm not sure it maps well to how a lot of people use social media. Time and time again it has been demonstrated that network effects have a lot of influence on the success or failure of social media services.

The upside of centralization is that it's easy: everyone is there. All the people you want to follow and all of the people who want to follow you, all in one place. That kind of simplicity means a lot to less sophisticated users.
