New paper out! 🌊
Delighted to share our latest paper on the colours of microplastic fibres in the environment. Reviewing 80 studies over 20 years, we found no link between reported colour trends and what is actually found. Most studies report blue, black, transparent and translucent fibres. We recommend harmonised colour reporting, as current methods rely on subjective visual identification. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dZXnDRkA

Today we have successfully ended the TRACE project led by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and Universitat de Barcelona, which contributes to our understanding of #Plastic fluxes and inputs from rivers and sewers to surface waters, and combines citizen science and modelling to understand where plastics come from and where they end up. Have you seen artificial turf at a music festival? It might seem harmless, but is it really necessary? Over time, it sheds tiny plastic filaments that pollute rivers and oceans, harms wildlife and may impact our own health.

Plastic pollution is threatening global ecosystems worldwide, including those in remote regions like #Antarctica. During the past month we have sampled surface waters, beaches and seabed sediments in search of macro litter and #microplastics to evaluate the current status of anthropogenic pollution across the Antarctic Peninsula. We have successfully deployed drifters and sampled floating #microplastics for the #TRACE project, which aims to track floating plastics from source to sink in coastal and nearshore environments by integrating high resolution modeling and monitoring. @aneguet

🚨 Our most recent publication explores artificial turf fiber pollution in river and sea surface waters. They can represent an important source of #PlasticPollution in aquatic environments adding to other known impacts (i.e. heat island effects, chemical leaching, biodiversity loss, etc.).
