Reflecting on these past few weeks, I have some thoughts about Twitter that I had to write down. But my thoughts were all a jumble. So, as one does in these situations, I wrote it all out as a list that can be read to the tune of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire." https://ironicsans.substack.com/p/twitter-is-a-dumpster-fire
♫ Twitter is a Dumpster Fire ♫

With apologies to Billy Joel

My friend @siracusa reminded me that Substack in the past has fared poorly at respecting trans people. So I will take this opportunity to say that trans rights are human rights, trans rights are especially close to my heart, and that I’ll continue evaluating where I post and how I post.

I’m tooting and not tweeting because of how crappy a different microblogging site’s leadership is, and I’m not at all averse to moving my new business/lifehack/strategy blog if the need arises.

Welp, I posted on Substack again. This time: Sales isn’t sales. https://lexfriedman.substack.com/p/sales-isnt-sales

The general message is: Salespeople aren’t gross. That used car salesperson image you have in your head — that’s not what sales really is. Sales is entrepreneurship.

Remember, you can subscribe to Substacks in your RSS reeder of choice by adding /feed to the URL, like so: lexfriedman.substack.com/feed

Sales isn’t sales

It’s entrepreneurship.

I’m impressed that The Goldbergs is still pretty good. That’s a long running sitcom.

I think the lesson we should probably take away from this whole Mastodon moderation incident is that we shouldn't be so quick to judge people's motives and jump to the worst assumptions...

Awww, who'm I kidding, it's social media!

@lexfri yeah that's a very strange move to make, especially against the largest instance admined by the head developer of the application, who has every incentive to try to correct the issue and had already mentioned that he's been scrambling to bring new mods online because the surge was too much for the current team.

I also don't get why they're seemingly jumping straight to defederating rather than limiting the server, which lets their users choose whether to follow that content or not.

@lexfri Couldn’t agree more. I’m not saying that there isn’t a problem - I’m sure there is! But the solution almost certainly can’t be silencing the biggest instance on the network, especially considering that’s likely where many of the “newbies” have ended up. We need to support the new users, not punish them for trying to learn.
If other instances really start blocking mastodon.social, I fear it’s a huge step backward for Mastodon in general. We’re really just hitting a tipping point. Instances are overwhelmed and struggling to scale.
If this instance I’m on has bad moderators, okay, let’s figure that out. But silencing a universe at this nascent stage is, in a word, bonkers.
And I hate #typos, so I had to edit once 😬

I’m supposed to do an intro post with hashtags.
