My feed is diary-driven, so activity and content varies. Will include heavy stuff like US/WA politics or mental health. Not lewd, but not prude.

Trying to press Send less often. Book threads are exempt because they are active reading; they are my thoughts prompted by the work, not summaries.

Fuck Nuance.

"MOVE Bombing II: Electric Boogaloo", starring Luiz Guzman as Nicholas Maduro.
Gotta love how people are comparing the abduction of Nicholas Maduro to an arrest in order to make it seem more legitimate as if the police flying into your neighborhood with attack helicopters and missiles would be legitimate.
"The President is an august and autocratic functionary, and he is surrounded by his State Officials who are the Executive, not one of whom sits in or is amenable to either the Senate or the House of Representatives. Nor does he sit there. He communicates with either one or other by dispatches when he condescends to communicate at all." (1920)
"It is not the people--the vox populi; but the vox Presidentis--the word of the President--that dominates the great national concerns of the United States to-day. The President has no Executive Coadjuators, but merely subordinates; and he is subject to no control even by those who elected him. All the people have is an ex post facto retributive power to refuse at the end of his presidential period, to re-elect him again. But before that could come around, the Nation might be in a vortex from which fifty years of effort might extricate it." (1920)

Here's what I was looking for.

"But the United States did not dethrone autocracy. It replaced the Sovereign with a President who differs from a King only in the circumstance that he is elected and his tenure of office is limited to two periods of four years each. ...But the replacing of one name by another effected little. It did not change the essential fact which we now clearly see that the United States is not a Republic but is, in truth, a Monarchy whose Sovereign is periodically elected and is called a President." (1920)

"The mother-in-law has caused more ruptures in domestic life than all the shortcomings of the immediate parties are concerned. Searing or extracting her tongue might be made a condition precedent to marrying the daughter or the son as the case might be." (1920)

[Yes, this is misogynistic, but it's in relation to a mother-in-law who was so mean to the wife that the Supreme Court of Michigan held that the husband's insistence that the wife live with the mother-in-law was cruel even though other options were not available. Lol.]

"The cause of all this [inequality] must necessarily be attributed to the state of our laws. It is obvious that they do not provide a correct rule of civil conduct between man and man because if they did we would have no poor. Neither do they provide a correct rule of civil conduct between the individual and the state, because if they did we should have no criminal class." (1920)

it's incredible how Anna's Archive has anti-design (forcing you to wait or slow downloads for free users, making you copy-paste URLs etc.) plus it's increasingly blocked by various providers, and it's *still* significantly easier for me to download a book there than through academic publishers, even when I have authorised access to the latter
