New York’s governor vetoes a bill that would have banned non-compete agreements because it would have made it harder for companies to “retain” workers.

This ignores the fact that non-compete agreements trap workers not retain them. Banning non-competes is one of the best things California has done and is one of the root causes of the dynamism of Silicon Valley.

It’s also why it’s so hard for other tech hubs to compete. Most governments are in the pockets of businesses.

New York governor vetoes bill that would ban noncompete agreements

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has vetoed a bill days before Christmas that would have banned noncompete agreements, which restrict workers’ ability to leave their job for a role with a rival business. The veto is a blow to labor groups, who have long argued the agreements hurt workers and stifle economic growth. But in the months leading up to the veto, the legislation had come under fierce attack by Wall Street and business groups in the state. They say the agreements are necessary to protect investment strategies and keep highly-paid workers from leaving their companies.

@mijustin Maybe different flavors of happiness? I have enjoyed business success in recent years, but also enjoyed being in the trenches building all day every day, early on.
@arstechnica A classic "you had one job" situation.
@heathborders I'm sure there are reasons why this isn't the best idea... but it seems to me they could use government assets like the large air base across the river, rather than the main civilian airport for the area, when bringing in high officials with tight security needs.

@marick @QasimRashid In the sense that claim is obviously true - at some level, a minimum wage would chop off jobs that can't be made workable at that level. Of course people argue how high the level would be to cause this problem.

But that is zero excuse to not index the minimum to CPI/inflation; the old number that wasn’t in the dangerous range back then, would not be dangerous now if it were merely indexed.

@carnage4life It’s infuriating defect/weakness in an otherwise pretty appealing school computer solution.

Google doesn't even sell most of the hardware… I wonder if these limits are primarily Google driven, or driven by the manufacturers who might be on the hook to help Google keep firmware etc. up-to-date through the expiration.

@emilyk The typical American has surprisingly little understanding of the history of who got to count as white. I wish this was covered in schools better; though I suspect it gets tangled up in the inevitable bickering around any racism related topic.
@thomasfuchs @elithebearded They never even offered it camo print frames. Marketing newbies :-)
@carnage4life Your screenshot is an improvement! In the first day, anti-spez was 90% of the surface area of Place.
@garius As I understand (as a non-billionaire) being at the top of the financial or power heap has been well understood for thousands of years to bring on a enormous risk of hubris. Because those around you stop telling you about your mistakes.
