Wer das, was wir hatten, ernsthaft als »Lockdown« bezeichnet, sieht ein Tempolimit auch als »Fahrverbot« 🤪
Let’s have a talk about the fediverse, defederation, and fediblock. Ever since I started using fedi, the concept of the #fediblock tag has been a thing. While the concept of a tag or “topic” for people to know what to block and why is theoretically a good thing, there’s multiple issues with it.
To start, a fair amount of admins take the fediblock topic and block list too literally, the topic, tag, and idea is not to give an absolutist list of instances every single person should block, but rather a suggestion of instances that should be blocked and why they should be. This is the first major issue with the current way fediblock is treated.
The second reason is that there is people who intentionally troll or abuse the tag. I have seen instances spread slander and false information about other instances to ruin their reputation or get other instances to defederate with them. There is multiple instances, such as mastodon.art in which do this. This is not a new thing, and any open system will have this type of issue, trolls and other toxic users tend to like to ruin the experience of others, if that means abusing systems put into place to prevent them from doing this, you can guarantee they will.
The third reason is a bit more complicated, the #fediblock topic and tag in a way sort of gamifies the act of defederating with other instances by indirectly spreading drama and toxicity. The second an admin shares an instance they blocked via the tag, it is spread across the network like a virus, and due to the reasons previously mentioned, it’s either ignored or blatantly accepted without evidence. The act of blocking other instances has essentially become a game. “Who blocked who?” ends up becoming a statement, other instances rushing to the “finish line” of blocking new instances posted on the tag. This is a toxic trait in itself, think for yourself, not as a collective.
Lastly, I want to bring up the entire point of why the activitypub protocol and the fediverse was made as a whole. The point of the fediverse is to allow instances to communicate without a central server or “instance,” this includes allowing each instance to follow their own rules, guidelines, terms, and blocks. If every single instance is blocking and following the same instance, this is no different than twitter and other centralized sites, because everyone is doing the same thing, it’s essentially amalgamating them into this amorphous blob of individual components into one single large one.
This needs to stop. Treat #fediblock as a suggestion, not an absolute commandment. Do not block an instance just because of word of mouth, do not block and instance without actual proof or actual validation in the claims. The problem isn’t the tag, topic, or concept, the issue is the people using it.

Therefore, I will close <a href="http://fapsi.be">fapsi.be</a> without replacement at the end of February.
