I was asked by a 20 year younger friend how my internet was back then. I needed a moment but then I told her the story of an IRC channel and how we made the day for a young girl who happened to be on our IRC channel. Because this is what my internet was like back then and I wish sometimes it still was like this. Let me tell the story:

I was 25, the channel members were like 20 to 30 years old. Somehow this young girl found her way to us. She was 14 when she joined the channel. >>

Political Scientists Reassure Americans That Stripping Minorities Of Citizenship Usually Where Descent Into Fascism Peters Out

CHAPEL HILL, NC—Responding to concern about the Trump administration accusing hundreds of Hispanic people living near the U.S.–Mexico border of having fraudulent birth certificates and revoking their passports, political scientists reassured Americans Thursday that stripping minority groups of their citizenship is usually where the descent into fascism peters out. “I know people might be worried that a targeted effort by a country’s leaders to erode the civil liberties and question the citizenship of a specific minority group is some ominous sign of even worse things to come, but in nearly all cases, this actually represents the low-water mark for fascism,” said Brian Snelling, professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, echoing the sentiments of political scientists around the country in explaining that the Trump administration’s accelerating use of white supremacist beliefs, discrimination, and violence to guide policy-making was actually a sure sign that egalitarian democracy was just around the corner. “This is a classic historical trend—an increasingly authoritarian ruler repeatedly demonizes a minority group with false accusations, increases the illegal imprisonment and deportation of members of that minority group who don’t have proper documentation in an effort to get people accustomed to the idea that something about this minority group is inherently criminal, starts essentially just questioning those minorities’ rights to exist at all, and then everything goes back to normal in six months or so. In virtually every fascist regime throughout history, the creation of detention centers for a minority group is simply the first sign that those detention centers are about to go away. So we urge you not to judge the Trump administration for denying citizens passports based on race, as that’s the sign that fascism is about to come to an end.” Political scientists also reassured Americans that since a country’s descent into fascism virtually always just goes away on its own, there was absolutely no need for anyone to do anything.

Fantastic post by @fimion.

At first I was like: Oh no, I guess I have to clean up my RSS reader because I certainly never subscribed to AI shilling blogs. Then I opened the post and had to laugh out loud.

The future of web development is AI. Get on or get left behind.

As you all know, the easiest way to set the time on a microwave oven is to plug it in at the right moment.
(Reference: https://chaos.social/@ant/109265527654254544)

Tired of doing this every few weeks to keep up with the drift of the shitty RTC?
Just add NTP to your microwave oven. The home appliance industry does not want you to know this simple trick:
Smart Plug + Home Automation

tbh, sometimes I don't know if my home automation hacks are genius or just absurd.

@fionafokus Both!

Absurd because they’re required (just allow us to turn off the clock!), but genius because it removes an annoying thing from the mental task list.

@fionafokus IoTQS
Internet of Technological questionable shitposts
@fionafokus the real question is: does that matter if they work?
@fionafokus My TFA (Dostman?) CO2 monitor drifts ~30s per month - it's currently 1 minute ahead. I've solved the problem with a magnetic micro-USB plug. (i don't have NTP kind of precision requirements, though - manual mode is fine) 😉
@platymew @fionafokus Oh, so it's not just mine that has this problem.
@fionafokus That wouldn't work with mine. When that thing repowers it sits at 00:00 until you set the time by hand.
@fionafokus Our Vaillant WiFi-only (!) adapter for our heating system would drop out of said WiFi regularly. I used a Zigbee socket to have home automation power cycle it whenever if wasn't reachable for more than 5 minutes
@fionafokus shoutouts to toshiba how though about this and will just disable the clock functionality if you don't set it and turn of the display after some idle time (at least thats how my microwave behaves)
@snaki @fionafokus and our Siemens microwave, made before German reunification, simply refuses to do anything until you set the time.

@IngaLovinde @snaki @fionafokus what... what? Whaaaat?

I turn off the oven when I don't use it (using the switch at the power plug). This behaviour would be absolutely infuriating to me.

@loke @IngaLovinde @fionafokus why would i want to do this? why is there a switch on the cable of the microwave? this would annoy the heck out of me. I can operate my microwave with a single button someone cooked hard with the ux

@snaki @IngaLovinde @fionafokus ah, no. The power switch is on the socket on the wall (UK style plug), not on the microwave.

I do it because I use the oven maybe once every two months, so there is no reason to keep it on.

@fionafokus the oven starts with 01:01 rather than 00:00? That's incredibly bizarre.
@fionafokus they have RTCs now? The one I had as a student used the mains frequency from the grid to keep track of time.
@leo @fionafokus That's... actually genius though
@pixx @fionafokus It was all good until UK had some problem with their grid that caused the frequency to be slightly lower. Not out-of-spec, but low enough to make the clocks fall behind after some days.
@fionafokus doesn't seem to take in account the hour change for people living in Europe (where the Summer Daylight Time starts and ends at 3:00 AM).

@deuchnord @fionafokus two time a year microwave doesn’t have the real time

Not a big deal I think 😄

@fionafokus The question should be, why does my microwave need to tell me the time in the first place ^^
@fionafokus my oven has a mode where the first time you press the clock button it just turns the clock off so I just do that instead of setting the clock
and my microwave is mechanical so no screens just a timer that rings a bell when it's done
@fionafokus I love this. When I replaced our microwave with a real outside venting hood I was happy to find the replacement countertop microwave is perfectly happy to not have the time set. But the drift on the clock in the hood is atrocious. Providing the hood starts with a time, I can put to use a spare zigbee switch.

@fionafokus Every microwave I ever had starts up with the clock in an unset state where it simply doesn't keep time until it is set. It also doesn't run until it's set... It just sits there blinking 12:00 until I manually hit cancel or set something.

This is... an interesting solution to the issue though. It... actually would work on any that actually run the time on startup.

@fionafokus that inspired me to develop my own solution
Present Day, heh... Present Time! Hahahahahahaha!

@fionafokus
Smart hack.

Maybe use a switch with power measurement to make sure the microwave isn't running.
If it has an oven function, you can also use the power measurement to get a notification when preheat is done.

@fionafokus @catsalad
A friend of mine used to plug in his VCR at midnight so it'd blink the correct time.
@FritzAdalis @fionafokus Was it one of those VCRs that would change time, but it's still blink until it was set?

@fionafokus

Lol my solution is to never never never ever set the time. Most devices display nothing at all, once you run a cycle.

I absolutely hate clocks in all things, cars, microwaves, whatever. What's the cultural obsession with clocks?

@fionafokus Now do the reverse. Turn your microwave oven into a NTP server.
@fionafokus I prefer this to making the microwave able to access the internet for the sole purpose of reaching an NTP server, because you KNOW some marketing idiot will be unable to restrain himself and you'd be required to login to cook. This actually happened with an immersion circulator someone gifted me. That was promptly returned for a dumb one.
@fionafokus if it's stupid and it works?...
@fionafokus Hard mode is programming a Haas robot to set the time when power is restored.
@fionafokus absolutely love it. What a fun project :)

@fionafokus I had been doing this for many years with a zigbee plug until my old microwave died.

The new one resets to 00:00, but the clock doesn't start ticking until you manually set the time, so I removed it. ;(
