@kocienda @atomicpoet @mike THIS ⬆️ Many people, including me, consider Mastodon be "hacky". Recently, I tried to follow someone on here but couldn't because of their server configuration. Almost every day, I randomly click on profiles only to be told that I cannot view toots from that account unless I sign up for a specific server. The decentralization Mastodon puts the burden on the user to figure things out, but most users are not capable or willing to host their own servers. Therefore, they create accounts on existing servers that have their own rules and values, including strict privacy policies that prevent users from other servers from viewing their toots. This can be confusing for unsuspecting users. The reason why monolithic social media platforms succeeded is not because users are stupid or because they received a lot of investment, but because they provided the least experience resistance.
