@candle okay but this is like, I'm also supposed to know what each place thinks of each other place? What is visible to who outside your 'home' instance(?)... or why sometimes you can interact and sometimes not? Now I have two different friend/follower lists with no easy way to move one to another? And there is now like four of everybody and they might move again soon? I mean I kinda get the metaphor but this is functionally much more complex than email from a user verbs perspective :/

@typhlosion if I had to do open mic standup under duress I'd just have people shout tech brands at me and I'd roast them, it would be so easy

@typhlosion @candle yeah I absolutely don't know how to balance the complexity that makes mastodon special with my own need for things to be simple enough to understand. I guess I'm just haunted by Google Plus (which had other problems, but) going 'sort your friends into circles!!' and me going 'yes, brilliant' and my friends going 'ugh what no u nerds that one extra step's a dealbreaker'
I can see both sides but personally I am only getting more overwhelmed, instead of more confident.
I think I got to the point where I understand just enough about federation to see how much I will never understand. Most of my life is like this but it would be nice if anyone else seemed to be struggling with this? I guess they just left, if they existed. The influx of supergenius tech people for whom this is a second language isn't helping. I'll keep trying, I really need a space like this but 'just' moving to another instance made too big a mess of concepts for my brain to process :[
