Athletes at the Winter Olympics in Italy are proudly wearing pins from other teams, and some are showing them off on social media. The exchange of pins is a beloved tradition that celebrates a camaraderie among athletes that transcends bitterness between governments. Pin trading dates back to the first modern Olympic Games which were revived in 1896. The athletes’ village in Cortina is the hub for their exchange. China’s pins include pandas and are admired for their beauty and variety. A Dutch pin featuring tiny clogs is esteemed for its uniqueness. Iran’s Alpine women’s skiing coach says pins from her country have been in high demand. Iran has only four athletes competing so there aren't many.

Many Minnesota-based athletes at the Winter Olympics this week have more on their minds than sports. Turmoil in the state from the immigration crackdown has created angst and added motivation. The U.S. Olympic contingent in Italy counts 26 athletes who are native to Minnesota. That trails only Colorado for the most by state. About a dozen others either call Minnesota home now or compete and train there in sports like curling or hockey. Biathlon team member Luci Anderson is from the Twin Cities area. She followed from afar when her family members joined a recent protest march in Minneapolis.

Tobias Kratzer unveils his world premiere production of “Monster's Paradise,” a satirical opera lampooning U.S. President Donald Trump. The opera, with a libretto by Olga Neuwirth and Elfriede Jelinek, features a gluttonous character called The President-King. Kratzer expressed disbelief at how the satire mirrors reality. The production, inspired by Alfred Jarry’s “Ubu Roi,” includes chorus members dressed as zombies and a Las Vegas-style opening. The President-King, portrayed by Georg Nigl, is opposed by a monster named Gorgonzilla. The opera ends with a humorous yet critical portrayal of power.
