@anneapplebaum

It’s a scary read, but not surprising.

Always some anti-social “experts” that believe they can create a perfect world - as long as they factor out the chaos agents humans are.

It’s an astounding naïveté, driven by people that don’t function with people.

It’s also incredible naive to believe Putin has any of that longtermism philosophy. Putin is only about personal power and wealth, plus narcissism.

If true Musk and Welch are being played as the fools they are.

We've closed up our Twitter account. A platform whose owner uses it to bait violent anti-democratic conspiracy theories and engage in overt anti-semitism is not a place compatible with our mission to inform, create accountability, and improve democracy.

It’s an interesting read! Certainly gave me insight.

I would definitely look at the finance side too. Twitter revenue 2021 was $5bn (a very good year) with 92% of revenue from advertising.

Despite high revenue Twitter was running at a deficit due to operating costs of $5.6bn.

Firing ppl will reduce costs. But income is probably reduced even more. It’s said 30% of ad revenue is gone ~$1.5bn. And the added interest payment of $1.2bn will struggle to be paid.

On Reddit a while back I read a really interesting comment by someone who works in advertising for a big brand.

He said Twitter already before Musk had the 2nd lowest ROI for online advertising (TikTok #1 IIRC). It’s a key reason Twitter struggled w valuation. When being on Twitter now represents a reputational risk the numbers don’t make sense at all for advertisers. That was the reason they fled so quickly.

Love it!

Early 1990s I moved from Norway. Missed so many dishes and most normal recipes weren’t much help as I couldn’t buy the ingredients abroad.

Luckily on a trip home I found a cookbook from 1933 that was used at the home economics schools back then. All dishes made totally from scratch!

Bring it with me wherever I move.

We really need to bring more Ukraine related accounts over here!

I especially miss Illia Ponomarenko, others from KyivPost and RA Lee.

On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence.
As our nation mourns another senseless act of violence against LGBTQ+ folks, we must stand firm in our condemnation of bigotry & our work to build safer communities.

I’m old enough to remember USSR. I remember listening to Radio Moscow and their rampant lies and propaganda. Yet when I met Russians they knew it was propaganda, and asked me as a westerner for the real story.

Yes, current Russians have been fed propaganda and disinformation. They’ve also - until recently - had access to internet and international media.

Current Russians choose to believe the lies, and they need to own that choice.

Gonna be an exciting Sunday to see whether the World Cup or the DMCA violations crash the birdsite first.

Many commentators are tweeting & tooting that we need to expand the SCOTUS. That is not the answer to everything. Unless you just want a larger Court, not bound by ethics rules, engaging in the kind of behavior described in the NYT piece. What we need are guardrails - an understanding that the Court sits w/i our democracy. Our job us to strengthen it by creating the processes that promote impartiality & insulation from lobbying, not crossing our fingers & hoping for the best.
