@daringfireball @gruber macOS 26.4 has Safari respecting this setting a bit better now!.

Yeah, I think most people have some incorrect assumptions. A merchant like Walmart can track purchases made with your Apple Pay credit card made with the same device. The device number is ‘stable.’

Apple Pay limits data brokers correlating your purchases across merchants and it prevents skimming and breaches/CC number exposure. It doesn’t prevent the merchant profiling you across purchases made with that same card.

@danielmunoz @daringfireball @gruber I never said it was the same. Yes, they can collect more data at Walmart, but the vast majority of people use one default card and whether I tap Apple Pay with the same virtual card number or pay with Walmart pay those transactions can all be linked to one buyer. After some time my Apple Pay virtual number will change when I get a new phone, but that’s usually a 2-3 yrs for all but us tech geeks that upgrade annually.
@daringfireball @gruber does it really stop collecting data? I pay with Apple Pay on Square terminals and places like Blue Bottle know it’s me because I request a receipt emailed. Yes, the card number is tied to the device and that changes, but the first transaction you do something similar can easily tie these together.
Also, not sure the Amazon example is about data collection. You’re logged in to your Amazon account to make so they already have the data.
@jsnell Great article and thanks for sharing it. Quick question - does the network reset delete all saved Wifi passwords out of iCloud Keychain? I seem to recall in the past it did that, and I've hesitated to do it given all the friend and family wifi I have saved.
@daringfireball @gruber I'm hoping this fixes one of the most annoying regressions since around iOS 17 - you can no longer tell Siri to skip a chapter in the Apple Podcasts app like you could before. It now skips to the next episode in your playlist instead of the next chapter in the current episode.
I can't tell whether that was intentional, as part of all the changes to Siri, or simply a bug that went unnoticed.
@imarc @daringfireball @gruber came to say the same. I have WhatsApp linked on a test Android and iOS device linked with my primary phone. It’s been like that at least a year when they allowed another phone to be linked … maybe longer
@rmondello question on Passkey implementation in the password 'app'. I added a Passkey to my Amazon account, but it has now removed the option to also have OTP which is still enabled. Thankfully I had my OTP also backed up in Authy separately, but this seems like a limitation where I can't have Passkey and OTP saved on an account. I'd love to hear if you think it's unnecessary to have both or if that should be feedback I submit for future consideration.
