My mind is racing, as it always has.
My hands tired, my heart aches.

Still gathering Schrofer code … one recent update to @drawBot broke my original code for recreating the script patterns on the covers of Mouton's Les Textes Sociologiques series, but: revisions, et voila. Reconstruction, examples of the original covers, Schrofer's plan on graph paper, and a field showing the gamut of the variable font's horizontal/vertical stroke:counter axes.

One thing that came out of my research for Beyond Bézier is the Stroke Scribbler, a @RoboFont extension that creates a Noordzij-style cross-hatch to de-emphasize shapes’ outlines.

It’s been programmed by (the best and coolest) @arthurfontzarelli and I’m super happy about that.

It is available on Github:

Finally online: Beyond Bézier, the research projects my dear colleagues and I undertook at Écal, where we thought about type design beyond making products that use Bézier outlines. Video lectures by Matthieu Cortat, @alicesavoie, Radim Peško, Florence Yerly, Micha Wasem and myself, as well as lots of nice bonus content.

Beyond Bézier
I can't read the words, but I have a suspicion that every spiderweb is a poem.

The recording, along with others of his favorite performances, was released as the “Birthday Tribute” compilation in 2010

Being exposed to Alfred Brendel, especially his playing and writing about Beethoven, was life-changing for me, sending me down a rabbit hole I have yet to emerge from.

I want you to listen to one piece: His performance of Op. 110 at the Salzburg festival in 2007, already well into his 70s, was transcedental. I used to joke that Schiff knows what it is about, that Uchida feels what it is about, but that Brendel has lived it himself in both its humor and its tragedy.

He will be missed dearly.

There’s still no way to have variable axes sliders always-open in an InDesign palette or something, right?

Nothing where I can read out the settings immediately when I click on a piece of text?

AI is just a tool, like a pencil. A pencil that can only write and draw what some faceless corporation somewhere allows you to write and draw.

“But I’d notice if the LLM started censoring my work!” Really? Did you notice this? https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/72603 The point of cognitive automation is NOT to enhance thinking. The point of it is to avoid thinking in the first place. That’s the job it does. You won’t notice when the censorship kicks in

I want to puke.

FRONTEX* has published propaganda material about deportations. For kids. Happy families get deported by happy police officers. And there are nice activities included, like drawing your friends and family.

Apple love to preach "the UI gets out of the way of your content" with each new redesign, but how true is that in practice? Let's compare the total height of the Safari UI with a toolbar, favourites bar and tab bar visible, across the three latest Mac OS design languages – Yosemite, Big Sur and now Tahoe. I've added a red line for emphasis.

It sure looks to me like the UI is eating more into my content with each redesign.
