We (UCLA Library) are hiring a Linux Development Support Engineer (looking for someone w/ 7-10 years experience). Come work with us! There are great folks here, and you'd be reporting to someone I have a ton of respect for (who used to do this job).

I'm happy to answer questions about our culture, etc. The short list: it's fully remote; all the devs you'd be working with are also fully remote; anticipated hiring scale: $125k/year to $155k/year. Read for more:

“All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible.”

Can't remember if I didn't get this far in the 2nd book, or don't remember it because it was like Junior High, but this is a good quote.

It's 1998, you make a website in the copy of frontpage express that came with your computer, it's just like Word and it's very easy, you figure out how to upload it to the couple megs of web space that your ISP gives you (the instructions are on their website), you visit your site in your browser and everything's fine and the site's readable and everything looks the way it should

🦝 "Wow, if it's this easy in 1998, I bet it'll be even easier in 2026" you think to yourself for some reason

Fantastic that Google changed the Drive system notification icon to look very much like the AirBnB one /s
Wikipedia has to go down in flames, so we can't easily fact-check AI search results!
If I were in charge, it would be against international law to use the term "ceasefire" to describe a situation where either or both sides are still firing.
What would you want out of a modern text-based RPG that's missing from the current offerings? Not just technically, but also content-wise. #gamedev
Snow Crash delivers a fairly grim vision of America's future, but it was overly optimistic about our ability to maintain global supremacy in the field of high-speed pizza delivery.

I have a Fitbit. I use it for two functions: daily step counter and what time is it? The first thing I did when I bought it was to disable every feature I could possibly find that tracked anything other than what time it was and daily steps, and disabled all sharing, pairing, etc.

Got an email a few days ago that Fitbit is turning into Google Health. It all sounds way more invasive and full of features I don't want or need.

Any good watches out there that count daily steps, and that's it?
