To follow up on this (see above). Would a DAG like this make sense if I wanted to investigate the impact of treatment contamination in a non-blinded trial investigating two different ventilator modes where severity might jeopardise protocol adherence? This would make randomisation the instrumental variable and actual ventilator mode the exposure, with severity as a modifier of both outcome and ventilator mode (sometimes in violation of treatment allocation). Or is this balderdash?
