Before I post anything else, I need to say that it's been a heartbreaking week at UVA. We're still mourning the deaths of D'Sean, Lavel, and Devin. Last Saturday's memorial service -- which, appropriately, was shaped by the aesthetics and rituals of the Black church -- began the healing process. Grief, consolation, and hope. Tears and a bit of laughter. And always the music, breaking our hearts and binding us together. The healing will never be complete, but our pain will fade. #UVAStrong
@jbf1755 BBQ is devine. I'm roasting a pork shoulder with Jamacian jerk spices. We should meet halfway.
@jbf1755 I've never thought of you as a southerner, but now I'm wondering. (Menu sounds great, btw. What time is dinner?)
@waldoj It's great to be back in the cool kids' club. I was worried it would never happen.
@aristofontes Thanks much. It was deeply annoying not to be able to access my account. And after I'd done such a good job of setting up my profile! 😀
So, I'm back -- after having been locked out of my account since the day after I created it. I've definitely missed those of you who've left twitter for good. It will be great to reconnect.
@jmcolberg Japanese Krautrock is entirely new to me, but I kinda like it. (I wish I could quote-boost. I had a pretty good joke to go along with it.)
@jmcolberg Sadly, Mastodon doesn't have the translate feature. Happily, I have my German-English dictionary right by my desk!
@Caris It's true. The faces draw you in. I've wanted to meet every single person in our Visions of Progress exhibition.
The last few years -- which I've spent immersed in African American portrait photography -- have made me a big fan of the genre. Here's one of my new favs. Private Harvey Hicks, from Poplar Hill, Virginia. He saw actions in France, during World War I, while serving in the US Army.
