The last few years -- which I've spent immersed in African American portrait photography -- have made me a big fan of the genre. Here's one of my new favs. Private Harvey Hicks, from Poplar Hill, Virginia. He saw actions in France, during World War I, while serving in the US Army. Visions of Progress: Portraits of Dignity, Style, and Racial Uplift, an exhibition that I curated, is now on view at the University of Virginia's Special Collections Library until June 2023. It's an exploration of Central Virginia history through the lives of people who commissioned portraits from the Holsinger Studio. It's also visual delight -- thanks to designer Holly Robertson.
