One reason many Americans express surprise at the behaviors of the Trump administration is that most are taught history through the lens of American exceptionalism. Understanding how, in spite of significant illiberal pushback, the U.S. was able to adopt liberal and progressive reforms is critical for providing ways to mitigate illiberal impulses and protect our democracy.

Let's be clear. Republicans are passing the deceptively named SAVE Act not because they can point to any form of systemic voter or Election fraud, but because it will disenfranchise tens of millions of women and minorities.
Since 1992, women have voted blue by 4 to 13 points. So rather than changing their policies to earn women's votes, they're changing the rules to prevent women's votes.
That's not democracy. That's dictatorship. That's MAGA.
