Dad/husband/PhD microbiologist. Working to bend Keeling curve with tech that’s sustainable in all dimensions.
Returned to my roots to increase carbon uptake while restoring trophic balance in aquatic ecosystems.

I wrote about golden mussels, how they've appeared in California, and what it means for our state!

Ocean acidification is a process resulting from carbon dioxide emissions. CO2 dissolves as carbonic acid, which reduces the pH of the water. Much like Tums dissolves in the stomach, the shells of calcifying organisms can dissolve in more acidic water. Shell growth of some clams are seriously impacted by acidification, while others seem to be unaffected! Different species vary in how exposed their site of shell formation is to seawater. Larval bivalves are usually the most heavily impacted. They're small, with little ability to "buffer" their shell-forming fluid from swings in pH, and are putting relatively high levels of energy into growing shell. Larval oysters grown at pH 8 grow normally, while their siblings at pH 7.49 are stunted with patches of active dissolution. #clamFacts

Mali's army said it repelled seven simultaneous attacks on military posts in Ségou and the mining region of Kayes where JNIM's increasing presence is aimed at undermining the military-led government's security and economic interests.

Spoke to BBC's FoA pod about militant pressure on the borders with Senegal and Mauritania that are maintaining joint security cooperation with Mali to try limit the threat terrorism poses for commercial operators and local communities: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0lmy71q

I've added a new graphic to my climate indicators page, which shows the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) used for monitoring El Niño/La Niña conditions. I will update it each month at https://zacklabe.com/climate-change-indicators/.

This graphic was created thanks to a follower request. Feel free to provide visualization suggestions any time!

And SCOTUS is a disgrace... As a lawyer, it doubly hurts to see how horrible they are. 😭

Some (good) personal news - I am so happy to share that today is my first day at Climate Central (as a Climate Scientist).

Ready to move the science and communication of it forward in this crucial moment. Follow our work on climate services and attribution at https://www.climatecentral.org/.

Climate Central

Climate Central researches and reports on the impacts of climate change, including sea level rise and coastal flooding, extreme weather and weather attribution, global warming and local temperature trends, carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions.

I am forever thankful for the kindness of so many people these last few months. I'll always remember it. Thank you.

Now I'm going to do whatever I can to keep on fighting, and more importantly support the early career scientist community in whatever way I can. Don't hesitate to reach out.

There are still *many* stories left to be told (since January)... but right now, I am just grateful ☺️

Misinformation: A Telegraph guide

1️⃣Find apparently shocking stat: EV fires "up 77%" 😱
2️⃣Always round up ("nearly double")🤔
3️⃣Downplay context: There are 105% more EVs🙉
4️⃣Sideline wider truth: EV fires 5-6x *less* likely🙊
5️⃣Add quote to cover yourself🙈
