“You either want to do the right thing or you don’t.”

Some of the U.S.’s most lauded archeological and cultural institutions are responsible for the failure under federal law to expeditiously return Native American remains to tribes.

America’s Biggest Museums Fail to Return Native American Human Remains

The remains of more than 100,000 Native Americans are held by prestigious U.S. institutions, despite a 1990 law meant to return them to tribal nations. Here’s how the ancestors were stolen — and how tribes are working to get them back.

Thought I’d start joining in on #photomonday #Fotomontag 📸

I started photographing more #birds this year, albeit just with my phone
(and usually through binoculars). It’s a fun way to document species I’ve seen without having to bring along heavy equipment!

Here are two American Coots on Lake Michigan last month. A lot of #ducks and duck-like birds migrate here in the winter.

I’m getting better at identifying #shorebirds now that I live near the water, but I have to admit it’s tricky!

the concept might squick you out, but the prescription poop (i.e. fecal microbiota transplants) could be the future of medicine, and that's a very good thing. https://www.inverse.com/mind-body/prescription-poop-future-of-medicine #FMT, #microbiome #prescriptionpoop
Prescription poop could be the future of medicine

Last month, the FDA approved a fecal-based treatment for the first time. This approval is likely only the start of a promising future for prescription poop.

For those unaware, hashtags mean different things here.

On mastodon, you can ONLY search for usernames and hashtags. So if you were into, say, model trains and wanted to get input from the wider model train community, you could use the tag “modeltrains “ on your post, and others who searched would find it.

Or, if you wanted to post about something that you’d rather not get input on from the community at large, like a hot-button political issue, you can leave the tag off

There were so many stunning ones taken in 2022, during the telescope's first year in space.

I rounded up some of the best ones for Inverse:

If you missed the Orion splashdown yesterday, here’s the abridged version in 11 pics/videos!

My favorite shot was from Orion’s camera looking upward as the main parachutes deployed. What a neat perspective 🪂

Union staffers at the NY Times will be on strike all day tomorrow (Thursday). Please don't cross digital picket line. No clicks!

"The historic work stoppage is set to go in effect at midnight on December 8 and last for an entire 24 hours. Instead of filing stories, employees will be seen picketing outside The Times’ offices at 1pm, with prominent journalists such as Nikole Hannah-Jones set to speak during a solidarity rally."

Was just noticing how much more at peace I've felt lately without Twitter in my life

Obviously there's still a lot in the world to be angry and frustrated about. But without the bird app, I don't feel exhausted from being bombarded by so much negative info and inflammatory opinions all at the same time

It's been a nice break, even if there are some aspects of Twitter that I miss (aka the very active journalism and academic community on there)
