setting up a mastodon instance is a wildly painful experience; got mine serving _something_, but nothing actually useful.

apparently the answer—as always—was file permissions.
just spent multiple hours debugging PHP errors about missing classes, only to realise that an entirely unrelated file couldn't be loaded because the repo submodules never got init (by me… i forgot to do it).
