In recent years, a movement to elect reform-minded prosecutors across the country has won hard-fought victories across a handful of large cities. Now a growing backlash is taking on a new form: state legislation. https://theintercept.com/2023/03/03/reform-prosecutors-state-legistatures/
17 States Have Now Tried to Pass Bills That Strip Powers From Reform-Minded Prosecutors

In recent years, just under 40 bills have been introduced in various state legislatures that give local prosecutorial powers to state-level officials.

@beecycling just wanted to let you know that one of your toots made it to Facebook as a meme! It always makes me so happy to see Mastodon memes instead of Twitter memes. So I like to close the circle and let you know where it ended up.
Just a thought: what if we stopped measuring the economy by the state of the stock market and started measuring it based on how many people are housed and clothed and fed?

Extra food stamp benefits enacted by Congress at the height of the pandemic ended this week, even as grocery prices surge.

The average food stamp benefit will come to about $6 per person per day.

Need I remind you that we passed a record $857 billion defense bill last year?

Congratulations, @walgreens! Your absurd prices were driving me away anyway, but this was the last straw. I just moved all my prescriptions to @cvs, which seems to have more sense than you do. You have stepped into it, bigly. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2023/03/walgreens-abortion-pill-access
Walgreens Caves To Antiabortion Republicans β€” Including In States Where Abortion Remains Legal

I posted last night about Hasan Minhaj calling out dipshit grifters, but he also quit Twitter on-air at the Daily Show in a fun rant about Twitter (that also sorta mocks people who left for Mastodon, but it's funny). Anyway, he should still join the fediverse. πŸ˜‚ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9KjWvMhPNs

This morning while reading Heather Cox Richardson from Letters from an American, I caught the story that the elected nutjobs/authoritarians in #Florida want to require BLOGGERS to register with the state if they write about the Florida state government. This is just so weird.

If this unconstitutional law passes, I'm so starting a blog about Florida politics and NOT registering with the state.

Bring it on, Florida. Bring it on.

Florida bill would require bloggers who write about governor, legislators to register with the state

A Republican state senator in Florida has introduced a bill that, if passed, would require bloggers who write about Gov. Ron DeSantis, his cabinet or state legislators to register with the state.

Last year, @ProPublica revealed that ticketing kids in school is rampant in #Illinois, despite a law intended to prevent it. State officials were horrified, embarrassed and vowed to put a stop to the practice. But a new analysis shows it's STILL HAPPENING: "Reporters have been able to obtain ticket records in 37 of those schools so far and found that students in 26 β€”or 70% β€” of them have been ticketed this school year, though some districts have scaled back the practice." https://www.propublica.org/article/illinois-school-police-tickets-law-reform
New Bill Could End Police Ticketing in Illinois Schools

Students have continued to get costly citations for vaping, fighting and other misbehavior even after state officials directed educators to end the practice.
