Always looking for reasons to discuss stroke width and the merits of hand-drawn charts

I've been posting and lurking on linkedin a lot over the past year, as a means of gertting that 'social fix'. but it feels like a bit of a job-posturing-here's-how-good-i-am space. so I'm going to try to ween off of LI and post more here.

To start: last week was shit for me, productively. I had to switch from a dataviz-first headspace back to a front-end app dev headspace, in an app that was a few years old. countless build issues, failing tests. it sucked.

that's all, just had to rant. 😘

New favorite thing: closing out productive slack thread convos with "this could have been a meeting"

Bad news - a new study from Consumer Reports & As You Sow shows that most dark chocolate on the market has unsafe levels of heavy metals: https://www.consumerreports.org/health/food-safety/lead-and-cadmium-in-dark-chocolate-a8480295550/

Good news - I made a rough Observable Notebook to navigate some of the underlying data: https://observablehq.com/@jasper/toxins-in-dark-chocolate

Will be updating & cleaning this up more in the coming days, but wanted to get it out there sooner rather than later πŸ‘

Lead and Cadmium Could Be in Your Dark Chocolate

Consumer Reports tested 28 dark chocolate bars and found cadmium and lead in all of them. Here's how to limit your heavy metal exposure.

Getting a head start on my focus for this next year - going deeeep on three.js.
Super simple experience but the level of detail in the coursework is fantastic! It's already been super beneficial to augment the little bit of three.js that I know with these lessons, specifically all of the available options for materials and textures.

Hello Threeeeee

I just finished #TheMinistryForTheFuture by Kim Stanley Robinson and really liked it! I'd recommend it to anyone interested in #solarpunk concepts that aren't too far removed from the present.

The book is a collection of different perspectives on projects lessening impacts of climate change and steering towards a better future, following the Paris Agreement. The method of story telling took some getting used to, but was overall effective and interesting!

Happy holidays to everyone here!
May your gifts be like an effective dashboard: useful, empathetic, and able to export to .xls
There’s something so deeply satisfying about building a thing because you think it’s cool, and not worrying about whether or not others find it interesting

a big pile of new features:
- the song-detail visualization has been overhauled (works across all browsers, too!)
- search for artists in the searchbar up top
- view your song history in the side panel

thanks to @matthras and @llimllib for the feedback on round 1 (admittedly, I didn't incorporate all of it, but I got the overall UX-improvement-theme πŸ‘ )

My favorite thing to do with this is to check out the difference between different songs - look at Aaron Copland's 'Fanfare for the common man' and compare it to John Coltrane's 'Central Park West' - I really think the personality of the songs comes through πŸ˜„
