I think this year we're done with resolutions.

It's time for revolutions instead ✊

#NewYear2026

I reckon there is probably not a lot more that we're going to learn tonight. Unless you're waiting to hear from someone who was in the area, probably best to flick the TV off and go do something else.

Disaster porn, giving the media to continue to speculationathon, helps exactly no one.

Cervical cancer is on track to be eliminated in Australia by 2035. In 2021, there were no cases of cervical cancer in women under 25, an outstanding achievement, and cancer rates continue to be extremely low Australia wide.

Unfortunately, the anti-vaccination trend kicked off by the Trump regime has had an impact in Australia too, with lowered vaccination rates in the last few years.

We are so close to eliminating cervical cancer. Get vaccinated!

I like Jimmy Kimmel. I really do. I have no issues with him.

I'm talking about something very different.

Kimmel was only suspended. But he's back now. Karen Attiah and all the other Black journalists are still fired.

Y'all do know how to fight, when you want to.

But you don't really want to. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Y'all fight for comedians. Which is why you don't have Black journalists to oppose Trump, but you do have famed resistance leaders *check notes* Matt Parker and Trey Stone.🤷🏿‍♂️

Kimmel is interviewing Gavin Newsom in his return. His podcast guests were the dudes that got the Black journalists fired.

You want to live in a world where Bill Maher and Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert and Matt Parker and Trey Stone are inside the line that must be protected at all costs...

but Black journalists and academics and professionals are outside of the castle walls, and are acceptable losses in a siege.

I'm telling you that that world doesn't exist.

Either we're all safe, or none of us are safe.

Kimmel and Colbert and jokes cannot save you from what's coming.

You need the people that you won't fight for, to fight for you.

But one-way solidarity ain't it.

One of my coworkers refers to Open Source as “the most incredible thing humanity has ever accomplished.” When he says that, he’s not making a socioeconomic or political statement, nor is he ignoring technical shortcomings. Rather, he is making an observation about how millions of people have created this immense pile of loosely coupled legos that actually all kind of fit together, without any central direction or fiat authority, with the only final arbiter being user adoption.

Hello aus.social members

A quick reminder that the Code of Conduct includes using Content Warnings (CW) and/or appropriate hashtags when posting about political matters such as party and electoral politics. This includes posting memes or reacting to current events.

Given the likely topics in the media at the coming election we are going to be keeping a closer watch on this, as we want to keep aus.social an inclusive space

Using CWs and hashtags enables people to choose to engage with or filter out posts. Hashtags will also help others who want to talk about these topics find your posts.

Suggested hashtags/CWs are things like Auspol, NSWPol

Why are ethics questions always:

“Is it ethical to steal bread if your family is starving?”

And not:

“Is it ethical to hoard a million loaves of bread when other families are starving?”

It's obvious that the Social media ban was written by and for people who are not aware of the complexity of the internet and online culture in general, and more specifically, supported by weirdos who never had real friends or experienced real connection.

but this screenshot hits a major point of the social part of social media. The real world is missing third places that are not a bar. Community is critical to us all and the youth are less and less physical places to be kids and build community (one of the reasons neonazis love gyms)

My teaching partner was running the "rainbow club" at her school, but didn't get picked up by any other teachers once she moved school... third places are important. If you have a problem with online social community, you need to replace it with something.
